Each product, even different sizes of the same product, has a unique barcode to identify it and allow it to be scanned at the point of sale. The most commonly used barcode is the 12-digit code. The code consists of bars which represent numbers.
Every UPC barcode has a series of numbers below a series of black or white bars which are separated by guard bars. The guard bars are two narrow strips that appear at either end of the code and also in the middle to separate the left and right 6-digit portions. Once you are able to “read” the bars, you can determine the numbers yourself!
